It’s Easter! – but I’m a gamer

Easter is about religion, bunnies, chocolate and Easter Eggs, so of course writers have spent the past few months digging around the back end of the internet trying to find the best Easter Eggs in games so they can stay current. I thought, ‘screw that’ and decided to share with you some of my favourite all-time gaming-related YouTubes.

Mass Effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nETxAJsD0N4

Easily one of the greatest franchises to come out in years, Mass Effect wasn’t just awesome, so were its trailers. My favourite was the second trailer because of the great direction, but mostly for the use of the track “Heart of Courage” by Two Steps From Hell. It was a match made in heaven. And speaking of great direction …

Dead Island: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg

Deep Silver’s marketing over recent times has been hit or miss (headless models wearing bikinis is a miss), but kudos to whomever came up with this original idea for the Dead Island backwards in slow motion trailer, which went viral faster than you can sneeze. And speaking of slow motion …

Cyberpunk 2077: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P99qJGrPNLs

Someone, somewhere, has the job of selecting music to go with video game trailers. I’d love that job. The trailer is pure fan-service to all the Cyperpunk fans because there are a LOT of nods to the franchise buried in there. The track is “Bullets” by Archive. And speaking of music …

Borderlands 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8GbEvsk3_8

This is the Doomsday Trailer, aptly named because the track used is Nero’s “Doomsday”. This not only fired up my “I want it NOW” character trait when it was first released, it got me into that whole ‘drop the bass’ thing musically, so now I’m a big fan of Nero, Skrillex, DJ Fresh and so on. And speaking of DJ Fresh …

DJ Fresh – Gold Dust Offical Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNuUgbUzM8U

Sony liked this track so much they used it quite a bit in recent marketing campaigns, and, um, it’s in Just Dance 4. And, um, skipping rope is a game, right? OK, I’m struggling a little to relate it to gaming, but the connection is there. And speaking of tenuous gaming connections …

Industrie Presents: Winter 13:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UJVC8BI9PE

Yeah, a clothing ad. Listen carefully and you’ll recognise the opening track to Borderlands 2, “Short Change Hero” by The Heavy. This is a cover of that track, I think it’s by an artist called Sarah Glynn and I’ve been searching everywhere for the full version, but I’ve yet to find it. I just love her arrangement. And speaking of clothing …

Two Worlds 2 Walkthrough Part 72: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1p-EFhkXlM

I have absolutely no idea why McAkomx decided to put his entire Two Worlds 2 playthrough up on YouTube, but it did a great job of showing off how great that game is (was). It shows off pretty much everything including the humour, environments, armour (see? clothing…) but most importantly the gameplay. It’s also the deciding factor as to why I ended up wielding a Polearm in my playthrough, it was a seriously overpowered weapon and I loved every second of it. And speaking of humour …

GTA 4 – Funny Things 2:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLXnBR-fsL4

Not only did Spectral upload a funny YouTube of GTA 4 moments, someone had the good taste to use Jdat’s Marakesh as the backing track, which is my favourite track from the hundreds included on the GTA 4 radio stations. Speaking of favourites …

Lost Odyssey Gongora Boss Battle:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsyGhZ26APw

Your average boss battle, except for the music, which is my favourite boss battle music of all time. It kicks in at around 4:28, so skip to there if you don’t want to watch all the preamble and do want to avoid a few spoilers. And finally, no real connection to anything …

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Deceived Trailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdgmH9Vv2-I

MMOs are quite hard to sell because MMO fans have to be drawn away from the likes of World of Warcraft and Guild Wars. The Deceived Trailer at E3 2009 did it for me – beautiful cinematics, great action –  I was hooked, preordered there and then. Very few trailers can do that for me, but this was one of the rare exceptions. I hope you’ve enjoyed my little list of favourites, if you haven’t seen any of them before I hope they managed to stir you more than all that chocolate you’re scoffing! Happy Easter

FantasyMeister is an old gamer. Born in the same year that development on ARPANET began, his pre-internet years were spent falling off skateboards and scrounging 10p pieces for the arcades. He got his first computer at age 14 (Sinclair ZX81) and his dream of becoming a bedroom coder were shattered by getting hooked on games instead. Sega, Sony and Microsoft are all subsequently to blame for his complete withdrawal from the outside world. He has a PC with Steam, an Xbox 360, a PS2, a PS4, a PSP, a 10.1" Android tablet, a PSVita, a Gameboy (somewhere) and a pile of shame so high that even Sir Ranulph Fiennes hasn't scaled it. He has a tendency to be gripped by life-sapping RPGs, and when he's not doing that he's entering competitions to win even more games.
